Agnes Water, 1770 & Miriam Vale

Agnes Water and 1770 are Beach towns in short distance of each other. Caravan parks in both areas fill up very fast. We thought we would try our luck getting a camp spot at Workmans beach (cheap Ranger monitored camping area) but it was fully packed. By 3pm on a Friday nearly all caravan parks were full apart from a couple of unpowered sites. We had a great time checking out different beaches and talking to other campers around the campfire.

Things We Can Suggest

Main Beach (Agnes Water) had a crew of beginner surfers getting ready to take boards out. Apparently it is the last northern beach with surf I was told. The kids were keen to go to a playground and I thought there might be something here. None was to be seen so we headed on to the beach which was stunning. The kids amused themselves climbing on the rocks for a while.

Captain Cooks Monument can be seen at 1770 and it was definitely easy to imagine why he landed here first :). The water was crystal clear and the beaches amazing. The monument is on a trail that leads into a conservation area but is easily accessed by car the trail then can be taken either by foot or bike to the tip of the coast with water in nearly every direction.

Fishing and Crabbing. While 1770 is a great fishing spot there are areas where fishing and crabbing are not allowed. Ask the locals or get a map is the best way to find out where you can and can’t fish. Hiring a tinny or fishing tours are readily available.Troy didn’t get a chance to go fishing this time and was bitterly disappointed(not for lack of trying). We were lucky enough to get some crab pots in but no luck with any keepers. Finding spots to put pots in was not overly difficult but to find a good spot be prepared for a hike through the mangroves if you don’t have a boat.

Miriam Vale was a short lunch stop we did after leaving Agnes Water. There is a little snack bar with yummy crab sandwiches and Troy thinks the pink Roadhouse does awesome coffee so we always stop there on a drive through. They have recently put in a huge playground which is definitely worth the stop if you have kids. The area is well looked after with a large grassy area and plenty of parking for your caravans. There is also a bush tucker walk that we didn’t get to go down as we couldn’t get them out of the playground.

Our Accommodation

We were lucky to get a site late on a Friday afternoon at The Reef Caravan Park. We did try the cheaper option first but were doubtful and as expected was packed. In the end I think it worked in our favour we got an unpowered site and the room we had was to die for. The owners were lovely and every night would have a fire which would bring everyone together to talk about their day. Also a dog friendly park and will look after your dogs if required.
