Fraser Island

Fraser Island

Our trip to Fraser Island left us with very split opinions. Maddi rated the trip as 1 Star, while Troy and I rated it at potentially 4 or 5 stars…. if we didn’t have kids. We spent a whole day driving from the Sunshine Coast to our camp spot at Wathumba. After 20mins of driving Roey was car sick so we did a clean up as best as we could and continued on in our spew scented car. As soon as we got out of the car we had our first experience of how vicious mozzies can be. Our camp was very secluded which was what we were going for at first, intending to have a nice quite spot to ourselves. This backfired as we were the only meal for the mozzies and even after several layers of every repellent they annihilated us. We had to drive a long distance to see the sites and the welts over the kids caused them to cry and whinge the entire time. I would reach around every 15mins trying to slather stop itch over them but because they had scratched themselves till they were bleeding the sting from the cream made them scream even louder. Even after sleepless nights and tantrums galore, once we saw some of the picturesque lakes we realised why Fraser is one of Australia’s top destinations. We quickly registered that it is not the beaches that people come from everywhere to see, it’s the many amazing swimming spots the island has.

Our Favs:

1. Lake Mckenzie

2. Eli Creek

3. Lake Wabby

4. Champagne rock pools

Our Advice:
1. Stay somewhere central or have an easy set up so you can move about.
2. Bring enough fuel- we limited ourselves ourselves because of this. ($2.10 on island)
3. Bring a swimming inflatable or noodle.
4. And well I don’t have much advice about the mozzies… I think for us it was unlucky timing.
