Sarina

Sarina

Buffy the Cane Toad

Sarina is a small country town in the Mackay region. It has also been known in the past as “stink city” named after the aroma of the ethanol distillery; this is seen as you drive through from the south side. It is a great little stop to refresh and has a dump point near the ‘field of dreams’ tourist spot. In the main street you will see Sarina’s statue, Buffy the cane toad. During footy season you will often see him dressed up in maroon attire.

Things We Can Suggest

Sugar Shed Products

Sarina Sugar Shed located in the field of dreams parkland. It gives you a short history of cane farming and takes you through the farming and mill process. They produce an assortment of liqueurs, chutneys and sauces and these are sampled at the end of the tour.

In the field of dreams area there is also an art gallery, historical centre, craft centre and playground for the kids.

Sarina Beach

Local Beaches are great for a spot of fishing or stroll along the sand. There are stingers in the area so be wary during this season taking precautions. Sarina Beach is the only patrolled beach in the area. Grasstree beach is another nice beach with a playground for the kids and a fish n’ chip shop and local store (my pick for something to eat would be the store). Campwin Beach can be seen opposite Grasstree Beach.

Having Coffee

Third Ground is a cafe that has gathered a reputation from travellers driving through. It is only a minute off the main street and they definitely do the best coffee in town. And the sweet potato chips are amazing if you’re looking for a snack while driving through.

Port of Hay Point

Take a drive to Hay point for a pub meal and to watch the ships from the Hay point coal terminal at work. There is a viewing platform from the Port Administration building that overlooks the coal terminals.
