Homeless

Homeless campers setup

Homeless and proud- I was approached by a fellow camper at Tully Memorial Free camp near Brisbane who was concerned we might be homeless. I was aware we looked like travelling gypsies everywhere we went, so I laughed when he approached me with concern, mentioning that the Ranger was a very friendly guy that could point me in the direction of help if needed.

Troy had left early in the morning and I was stuck with the grommets. I realised I hadn’t had time to get dressed for the day, wearing some tracksuit pants and one of Troy’s old shirts. The kids were in worn shirts and underwear. And we were all shoe-less. I looked over at our camp, we were yet to find a suitable place for things. Generally when we pull up at a stop it doesn’t take long for the mess to spread. Washing is hung wherever we can find space, kids toys are scattered across the whole grounds, picnic rugs are spread out for the kids to lounge on and the kids like to park up their potty in the most scenic spot in the park. And I swear the kids lunch menu of honey on a slice of flat bread is not laziness, it’s just a typical phase of toddlerhood – some days it’s just best for reasons of sanity that their odd demands are met.

After leaving so much behind our family is quietly enjoying our homelessness as our backyard will always be an amazing open space of new places to explore.

  1. Oh kelly that is pretty funny! You guys are doing what lots of us would love to do. Enjoy while the kids are young. Honey on flat bread that is Keysen’s staple at the moment to lol! Toddlers and their food habits, it’s the life of me😖
If you make it to WA, please let us know as there will always be a bed here for you guys.
Have lots of fun exploring our country xxxx

    1. Bahahaha I feel so embarrassed some days when we have to go to the shops. It’s so hard finding pants that are clean and socks that match etc

  2. I was just thinking about you earlier and wondering how your travels were going when I saw this pop up! Sounds like your adventure has well and truly started! 😂😘

  3. Well done just keep enjoying yourselves. We did an around Aust trip in a Topogee camper (tent on wheels) with our two sons back in 1987 and lived and enjoyed our trip as you all are. We had a dog as well. Believe me there is not much room in the size van u are in. W have now moved up a bit and have a Toyota Coaster camper now, but love to free camp.

    1. Thanks Geoff. I somehow approved your post but haven’t seen it till now. It does get a bit squishy and my family thinks it’s hysterical when we all pile in there. We’ve even had people crash in it with us on visits. I would love to hopefully get something bigger one day but it’s definitely lots of fun for the moment.
